How Often Should I Replace My AC Filter?

How to Replace Your AC Filter
- Turn off your AC system. This keeps air from blowing while you’re working and prevents any unfiltered air from getting through.
- Remove the old filter. Take note of which direction the arrows on the frame are pointing. Those arrows indicate the direction of airflow, and it’s important to install the new filter the same way. Air should flow toward the system, so the arrow typically points toward the ductwork or air handler.
- Slide the new filter into place, making sure it fits snugly and the arrows are pointing in the right direction. If the filter is too small and there are gaps around the edges, air will bypass the filter entirely, which defeats the purpose.
- Turn your system back on and make a note of when you changed the filter. Some people write the date on the filter frame with a marker, or you can set a reminder on your phone for next time.
How a Dirty Filter Can Hurt Your System
